Can a Premium WordPress Theme be Free?
I’ve already told you essentially if you think Premium WordPress Theme means free, you’re a tad misguided. Don’t be offended, I’m just pretty much upfront about such things.
In a previous post, ” Socrates Premium WordPress Theme, I told you I would bring you what I consider the best free WordPress theme. Note, I did not call it a premium WordPress theme. In a moment you will be able to decide.
Taking the “Premium” from Premium WordPress Theme
Have you ever spent time surfing through galleries of free WordPress themes?
I certainly have, and it’s one task I’ve come to hate. When you see one theme that seems to catch your eye, then look at it a little closer, you find out it’s missing three or four or five of the features you really want to make your blog theme sing.
Then you pick one, and you think, “This is it!”
You install it, you go the the theme functions, and find “This isn’t it.” So now you have to uninstall the theme. Well, you don’t have to, but I do. Then you start the search all over again.
I’m sorry, but this simply isn’t fun to me, and it certainly isn’t a money making activity. I thought we were supposed to be making money blogging. Not while we are haplessly searching free themes.
Anyhow, in all my searches (there’s been a lot!), I’ve found one free WordPress theme you can nearly call a premium WordPress theme. Here it is…
Is Atahualpa a Premium WordPress Theme
Well, I’ll answer the question right off. No! However, here’s why I think it is the best free theme…
Atahualpa WordPress theme is definitely the most flexible of the free WordPress themes I’ve found. You can change just about everything in it. This sounds great, and if you’re very determined and very patient, then you will love using this theme.
The image to the left is the complete menu for the Atahualpa theme.
It is very in-depth, and covers just about everything you can think of you might want to manipulate in your theme.
Some of the key things like the ‘Configure SEO’ selection on the menu. It allows you to enter page titles for individual blog posts, set noindex-nofollow for you desired pages.
And you don’t need a plugin to do this. This is a plus, so you don’t need plugins like AllinOneSEO or whichever SEO plugin you normally use.
You can also pretty easily set the width of your blog area, and decide on how many columns you want.
The sidebars can be made to be present only on the pages you desire.
The challenge is, if you really want to make this a custom WordPress theme, you have to know CSS and html, and spend tons of time manipulating it.
Your homepage can be set as excerpts, full posts, or some combination of both.
Where things get hairy is all those things you see saying “Style…” on the option tabs. Good luck with this if you don’t know how to us CSS and html. This is what makes the theme not a premium wordpress theme.
I’m pretty good at figuring out things like html code and CSS, but I’m far from an expert. Working this part of the theme options about drove me nuts. After an hour, I just quit. I couldn’t take anymore.
After trying to fully configure and customize this theme, I found I would still have to hire a “coder” to get it done right. Ugggh!
This kind of frustration doesn’t occur with the themes I review and advertise as a premium WordPress theme. A real, premium WordPress theme for me, doesn’t make me pull my hair out.
Sure, they need configured. No doubt about it. However, they don’t leave me wishing I never started trying to customize my theme.
So, for the moment, the only place I have this theme is in my test blog, where I determined it is very good as a free theme, but I don’t want to mess with it. I’d rather buy a more user friendly premium WordPress theme.
